The Prime Minister’s Power Breakfast

Winston Churchill was known for his hearty appetite and his love of a traditional Full English Breakfast. This substantial meal was a staple throughout his life, providing the energy needed to lead Britain through its darkest hours during World War II. Churchill notably avoided black pudding and would have missed out on hash browns, as they’re a more modern addition to the traditional fry-up.

Churchill’s particular preferences included bottled orange juice over fresh-squeezed, black cherry jam for his toast, and the addition of cold cuts and tinned pineapple alongside the traditional fried components - making this breakfast even more substantial than usual.

Instructions

Cook the Sausages

  1. Heat your pan: Use a cast iron skillet or large frying pan. Heat over medium heat and add a generous squirt of vegetable oil.

  2. Cook the sausages: Add the pork sausages first as they take the longest to cook. Turn them frequently to ensure even cooking and a nice golden color all around. Cook for approximately 12 minutes on medium heat (timing will vary based on sausage thickness).

Add the Other Fried Components

  1. Move sausages aside: Once the sausages are almost done, push them to one side of the pan.

  2. Add bacon, mushroom, and tomato: Place the back bacon rashers in the pan, along with the whole mushrooms and halved tomato (cut side down).

  3. Cook the bacon: Fry the bacon until it reaches your preferred texture - crispy edges with good color, or slightly softer if preferred. The mushrooms and tomato should cook alongside until tender and caramelized.

Fry the Eggs

  1. Heat a second pan: In a separate frying pan, add a modest drop of vegetable oil and heat over high heat.

  2. Fry the eggs: Crack the eggs into the hot pan. The high heat will cook them quickly on the outside while maintaining a runny yolk. This will also create nice brown, crispy edges.

  3. Baste the tops: After about 2 minutes, baste the tops of the eggs with the hot oil to cook off the runny white on top.

Make the Fried Bread

  1. Fry the bread: Remove the cooked eggs from the pan. Place 2 triangular pieces of white bread into the remaining oil. Flip occasionally and watch the bread soak up the oil and turn golden brown. Remove when crispy and golden.

Warm the Beans

  1. Heat the beans: While everything is cooking, warm the Heinz baked beans in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Assemble and Serve

  1. Plate the breakfast: Arrange all the fried components on a large plate - sausages, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomato, and fried bread.

  2. Add the beans: Spoon the warm baked beans onto the plate (or serve in a small pot on the side if you prefer to keep them separate).

  3. Add the sides: Arrange the pineapple slices, cold cuts of beef and ham, and a small dish of black cherry jam on the plate or alongside.

  4. Serve with drinks: Complete the breakfast with a pot of strong tea and a glass of orange juice from concentrate (Churchill’s preference over freshly squeezed).
